SFAKIA
Sfakia is one of the most historical places in Crete. It is south of Crete and had a critical part at most wars Crete took part, because of it's unreachable geographical position.
Sfakia is characterized by it's natural beauties, the historical monuments and churches and also for the great hospitality of the villagers.

You can travel to Sfakia by road or sea, following ships with specific routes Sfakia - Loutro - Gavdos - Ag. Roumeli.
Sfakia is surrounded by many beautiful beaches. While you are at Sfakia we recommend visiting Fragocastelo which is quite historical as well.

GAVDOS

Gavdos is at the southest edge of Greece. It is a small island with great history. It is 23 nautical miles southest of Sfakia and it's shape is triangular.
It is said that Greek ancient tragic poet Homeros was reffering to Gavdos when Odysseas visited Kalipso's island.

During the Hellenistic Period, Gavdos constituted a base of operations and refuge for the pirates. It was connected to Gortyna, which was powerful at that time, and paid tax to it. During the Venetian Occupation, an attempt was made in order a fortress to be built that was never finished, and consequently it remained to the disposal of pirates for many centuries. In Recent Years, Gavdos was a place of deportation for detainees.

If you are lucky at your trip to Gavdos you might meet large whales!
